Following a lower salt diet can be difficult. Many of your favorite food may contain lots of salt. Mexican is one cuisine that is often rich in sodium. This salt-free fajita seasoning is made without any salt.
You don't just have to use this seasoning mix for fajitas. The mix will work with any Mexican recipes. Not only do I use this in my sheet pan chicken fajitas, but also turkey taco bowls.
Just 2 teaspoons of packaged fajita or taco seasoning contain about 300 mg of salt per serving. There are lower salt versions available, however, they still have over 200 mg of salt per serving. Not the best option if you have to lower your salt intake.
Tips to make your own Mexican seasoning:
- Chili powder: this is the bulk of the seasoning mix. You can increase the amount, however for more heat increase the cayenne.
- Garlic powder: do not use garlic salt only powder to make this truly salt-free.
- Onion powder: same suggestion as garlic powder, do not use onion salt.
- Cayenne pepper: this is minimal, so if you want more heat feel free to increase a bit.
- Store in an air-tight container in a dry place.
- The mix can be stored as long as other dried herbs.
